The Quiet Meaning of a Person Waiting in a Subway Station
This photograph catches a person waiting in a subway station beneath a wide flight of stairs, while the city continues above. The small stand on the right belongs to him, and he is waiting for commuters coming from the metrobus to stop and buy something.
Back to school, back to rushing. I was hurrying down the metrobus stairs on my way to class when I saw this scene. I wondered whether I should get behind the person, take out my camera, and make the shot. Missing a moment like this would have been foolish, so I stopped.
The photograph seems to ask a bigger question. How much of life is movement, and how much is the small, quiet pause before we continue? The stairs point upward, the sign points onward, and the seated seller turns waiting into a temporary home.
It is one of my favorite photographs. He was waiting for customers, and perhaps for the next small exchange that would carry the day forward. Maybe all of us are waiting for something ordinary that keeps us moving. Either way, I am glad I did not let this person waiting in a subway station disappear into the rush. 🥰😂
