The Things We Hide Behind a Smile

The things we hide behind a smile: a warm portrait of a smiling red-haired woman beside a glass of red wine.
A smile holds more than it says in warm shadow.

The Things We Hide Behind a Smile in This Portrait

I wrote something long and beautiful for this photograph. Then I wanted to continue the post in a different way. It turned out that the page would not save like that, and all of it disappeared. I will not write it all again. Something heartfelt comes only once. You catch it when it arrives, or it is gone.

This was part two of a home-studio experiment. The room stayed close and dark; a glass of red wine held a little color at the edge of the frame, while the model's smile did not try to fill the whole room. It is there, warm and open, but it does not feel like it is telling us everything.

What a Smile Can Keep

At the time, I thought there were three photographs still waiting from the same session. I also hoped we could keep making photographs with other models. There is no grand conclusion here, only a small wish to keep looking and to keep making room for another frame.

The things we hide behind a smile do not always ask to be explained. Sometimes they only need a little shadow, a quiet moment, and a photograph that lets them stay unnamed. The things we hide behind a smile can still be felt. 🥰
