A Crow on a Street Lamp, Painted by Sunset

When a Crow on a Street Lamp Looks Like a Painting

A crow on a street lamp sits between two dark shades, while the low evening sun brushes the metal arm and the bird's edges with copper. The sky is calm, the lamps are almost silhouettes, and the whole frame feels less like a record of a street than a scene someone might have painted from memory.

I cannot remember exactly where I took it. That part of the story has gone soft, but the picture stayed sharp enough in my mind to return here. It is one of those photographs that makes me ask the title question before I even press publish: is it a photograph or a painting?

The simple answer is that a photograph is captured with a camera, while a painting is drawn. The more interesting answer is that light can make a photograph borrow the mood of a painting. Here, the sunset does most of the brushwork, and the crow contributes the attitude.

A crow on a street lamp needs very little to become memorable: one quiet bird, two lamps, a long diagonal and a warm edge of day. I may have forgotten the address, but I still like the way this bird turned an ordinary lamp into a small stage. 😊
