Bougainvillea in Heybeliada, Seen Through the Shadows
Bougainvillea in Heybeliada is usually impossible to miss. It can be bright, sunny and cheerful without trying very hard. For this frame, I chose a different feeling. The magenta bracts gather in a little patch of light while the leaves and garden fall back into deep green shadow. Some people may find it too dark. I like it that way. 😊
I photographed it during a walk around Heybeliada. Normally, I do not enjoy photographing a place again once I have already worked there. Before setting out, I thought I would probably find nothing worth photographing. Instead, I came home with eight or ten new frames. I will add them slowly, because there are still many photographs waiting in my archive too. 🥰
A full walk around the island is one of my favorite things to do there. For a while, being charged simply to pass through Degirmenburnu annoyed me enough that I even wrote about it. By the time of this walk, the road itself no longer required a fee unless I wanted to enter the picnic area. That small change made the island feel more open, and I was glad to see it.

I also have a small YouTube channel called Hadi Gezelim BE. If you would like to follow the complete island walk, the video below is there for you.
Not every return to a familiar place needs to repeat the same photographs. Sometimes it only takes a darker corner, a little patience and a flower that catches the light differently. That is how I want this bougainvillea in Heybeliada to stay: quiet, deep in shadow and a little more mysterious than a bright afternoon postcard.
