A Child in a Crowd Who Finds His Own Space
I took this child in a crowded waterfront photo on September 10, 2011, about three months after buying my camera. The scene is in Üsküdar, across from the Maiden's Tower. A child stands in the middle of a busy waterfront while the adults around him wait, photograph and fill every other space.
Reading the Space Around Him
This was one of my first DSLR periods, so I was still learning everything by instinct. The frame is not a perfect description of the place. The background could have offered more context, and I would normally prefer a wider rectangle. Still, this child in a crowded waterfront scene creates a quiet opening inside the crowd, and that opening is what I keep seeing.
The older men seated nearby make the scene feel like two different rhythms sharing one waterfront. The child seems to be living the moment while the adults have settled into watching it. His worried look also suggests a future version of the same crowd, waiting for him somewhere ahead.
When have you noticed one person creating a little space for themselves inside a crowd?
