The Quiet Center of a Moving World
With her eyes closed and both hands wrapped around the swing chain, the child becomes the quiet center of a moving world. Panning photography holds her almost still while Göztepe Park rushes past in streaks of color.
About a month after sharing another experiment with this technique, I made this photograph during a class trip to the park. The framing has its imperfections, but they are not what keeps me looking. It is the child’s expression, caught between movement and stillness.
There are days when I understand that expression too well. Conditions keep getting heavier, and sometimes I want to close my eyes and let the difficult moment hurry past. I know I am not the only person who feels worn down this way. The photograph gives that feeling a shape: the world blurs, but she keeps holding on.
That is what I love about panning photography here. The technique creates speed, but the small human moment at the center feels quiet.
