A Green Plant Growing Through Rust Finds the Light
While waiting for a friend near Sogutlucesme Train Station, I wandered over to the old engine. At first, the metal looked completely still, but a small green plant growing through rust had pushed into view. That bright leaf against dark steel felt less like decoration and more like a quiet rebellion.
When Steel Gives Way to a Leaf
I did not know this particular engine, but it brought back a familiar childhood memory. In Balikesir, there was a similar locomotive. We used to climb onto it and play for hours. Nothing grand happened there. It was simply one of those ordinary joys that time later makes precious.
The engine in this photograph had the same neglected feeling. Paint had worn away, steel had been eaten by rust and years of strength were slowly surrendering. Yet the scene was not completely sad. The little plant had found a place to grow where no one would expect softness.
Looking at this green plant growing through rust, I kept thinking that steel can outlast people and journeys, but life is patient. It needs only a crack, a little rain and enough light.
I made this photograph at Sogutlucesme Train Station in October 2019 with a Sony XZ. The locomotive may have been left behind, but the green rebel was already moving forward.
What forgotten place brings back one of your happiest childhood memories?
