The Kinaliada Crow That Interrupted My Experiment

A Kinaliada Crow Arrives at the Right Moment

A Kinaliada crow lifts away from the shore just as the afternoon light begins to soften. Its wings blur into the movement, the sea shimmers behind it, and a photography experiment that had produced nothing suddenly leaves me with one frame I want to keep.

When I closed my old site, fotografci.BE, and moved to this new domain, I began adding photographs slowly instead of uploading the whole archive at once. That is why many of the images appearing here were made a long time ago. This one, however, is still fresh. I photographed it yesterday, September 16, 2020, during a walk around Kinaliada in Istanbul.

And how good is the BE.photos domain name? Nobody has said, “Wow, look at that name,” yet, but never mind. I still think it is a wonderful domain. 😁

I love photographing animal friends because they always seem to offer something unexpected. This photograph is not entirely in my usual style. I had been experimenting with slower shutter speeds beside the shore, hoping to create a longer exposure without an ND filter. Nothing useful came from it. 🤣 Doing it properly would have required more time and probably lying across the rocks to find the right composition.

I had only just started my tour of the island, and it was already around four in the afternoon, so I decided to stop struggling and continue walking. Then this Kinaliada crow landed a short distance ahead of me. I made the photograph with my Nikon D90 and 18-105 mm kit lens.

The composition is not perfect, and the movement is rougher than the photographs I usually choose. Still, that is exactly why I am sharing it. The frame feels new to me, and sometimes a photograph deserves a place not because the plan worked, but because something better interrupted it.

I may have written this story in a wonderfully tangled way, but the Kinaliada crow saved the afternoon far more neatly than I have explained it. 😋🥰

After a nice crow photo, maybe you like these sweet cats too 😍
