Some Friends Are Best Left in Peace
This sleeping dog in grass is not posing for the camera. It has found the softest possible border between being awake and disappearing into the park. Only part of the face is visible through the blades, the eyes are closed, and the whole animal seems to have negotiated a private truce with the afternoon. I remember looking at it and thinking that some friendships begin by not asking for anything.
The Humans Were the Real Disturbance
This became another friend from Maçka Park, a small series of faces and bodies that happened to meet me there. It had been a long time since I had gone back. I wondered whether the place had changed in the meantime, because we have a talent for entering beautiful places and leaving our fingerprints all over them. I hoped the grass still knew how to hide a quiet friend.
I do not love my framing here, but this sleeping dog in grass remains one of the photographs I love. It is soft, private and completely uninterested in performing for us. The dog is not looking at the camera, not asking to be admired and not trying to make the moment bigger than it is. That may be exactly why the photograph stays with me.
Sometimes a good friend is simply someone who lets the world pass by while they rest. 😊
