The Squirrel Peeking from a Tree I Cannot Place
A squirrel peeking from a tree looks straight at the camera, framed by a dark fork of bark and a web of winter branches. The squirrel keeps its warm russet color while almost everything around it fades toward black and white. It feels like a tiny visitor who found the one bright seat in a quiet season.
The honest problem is that I cannot remember where or when I took this photograph. Was it a park, a garden, or one of those walks that quietly blend together? I suppose I am getting old. I was only twenty-eight at the time, which makes the joke much better. 😂
In many American and European parks, seeing a squirrel outside is ordinary. In Turkey, it still feels like a small event, or at least a less predictable one. Maybe that is why this face stayed with me, even while the date and place escaped.
A squirrel peeking from a tree does not need a perfect memory behind it. Sometimes the photograph keeps the meeting for you. I may not know the address of this winter branch, but I remember the direct little stare. That is enough. 😊
