A Quiet Moment at Iznik Hagia Sophia Mosque
We had gone to Lake Iznik for a small photography trip when I made this photograph. Later, I checked my notes because I did not want to name the place from memory alone. Yes, it was Iznik Hagia Sophia Mosque.
Inside Iznik Hagia Sophia Mosque, a man sits in a narrow piece of sunlight with an open book in his hands. The old walls, the deep shadow and the stillness around him made the moment feel much larger than a quick travel photograph.
I might have placed him a little further to the left, and perhaps let the shadows stay a touch deeper. But this is what I like about looking back at photographs. They show us not only what we saw, but what we were still learning to notice.
The same trip also gave me a very different Iznik memory, one shaped by the light over the lake.
